PRESS RELEASE

GEORGE LAPPAS

April 5- May 17, 2001

George Lappas was born in Cairo of Greek parents. He studied Clinical Psychology, in the United States, Indian Architecture and Sculpture in India and Architecture in London. From 1976 to 1981 he studied at the Athens School of Art in the Sculpture Department, and continued his studies at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris. He lives and works in Athens and teaches Sculpture in the Athens School of Art.

In George Lappas’ recent work, photographic transparencies are used at a large scale to create the representations of objects. Replacing the real by its three dimensional photographic representation, the artist becomes involved in a process of object transformations. Using light and the surrounding space he commences a dialogue between sculpture and photography.

The works presented in the gallery Bernier/Eliades are dominated by the struggle between the sculptural presence and the photographic transparency so that the photographic elements are absorbed and used in the creation of powerful luminous spaces.

A “Truck used for the transport of boats”, made entirely in actual size by photographic transparencies, holds a dominant position in the show. The sculptures of the exhibition belong to a thematic circle titled “Moving Laocoon’s household before the serpents set in”.
